Karun Nair’s Emotional Return to Indian Test Squad: “Life Has Come Full Circle”

Eight years after his surprise exclusion from the Indian Test team, despite scoring a triple century, Karun Nair is back, and in a twist of poetic justice, he returns to the squad in England, the very place where his international journey was abruptly halted.

Now 33, the right-handed batter from Karnataka is cherishing the moment and the environment that comes with it. “Life has come a full circle because I went out of the team in England and now I am coming back into the team in England,” Karun said in an interview with the BCCI.

His comeback is not just about numbers, though they are impressive. A stellar 2024–25 domestic season with Vidarbha saw him amass 863 runs at an average of 54, leading the side deep into the Ranji Trophy and proving that he still had the temperament and skill to compete at the highest level.

But for Karun, the return is deeply personal. “My first thought when I woke up (after being dropped) was I want to play Test cricket, I want to play for India again… that’s probably what kept me going,” he recalled. “Every day I used to wake up thinking what should I do to reach that goal.”

What adds to his comfort this time is the presence of familiar faces in the dressing room — long-time friends K.L. Rahul and Prasidh Krishna. “Playing alongside Rahul and Prasidh is also a very comforting factor. We’ve played cricket for so many years since probably we were young kids and grew up together.”

Karun also opened up about his mental transformation during the years away from the Indian team. “I always think about positives, have certain goals in mind, visualise things and have real belief,” he said. “I am mentally more patient and self-forgiving now.”

And the moment he truly felt he was back? “When I saw everyone for the first time, that time I realised I am finally in the team.”

As India embarks on a five-Test battle against England, Karun’s return brings a story of resilience, patience, and unwavering determination. “I enjoy the feeling of wearing this jersey… and trying our best to win games for our country,” he said, visibly emotional but focused on the road ahead.
