Indian Super League champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant are on the verge of finalizing a high-profile signing as they enter advanced negotiations with Brazilian forward Robson Robinho. The 29-year-old attacker, currently with EC Água Santa (SP), is expected to be a direct replacement for the recently departed Greg Stewart.
Robinho, who made six appearances this year in the São Paulo-based third division side, is no stranger to South Asian football. During his four-year stint with Bashundhara Kings in Bangladesh, he won seven trophies, including four consecutive Bangladesh Premier League titles from 2020 to 2024. With an impressive record of 64 goals and 49 assists in 97 appearances, Robinho’s return to the region is highly anticipated.
Sources close to the negotiations reveal that Robinho has agreed in principle to join Mohun Bagan, with a commitment to only represent the Mariners if he makes the move to India. This is a significant coup for the ISL club, especially considering that rivals East Bengal were also vying for his signature. East Bengal’s new head coach Oscar Bruzon was eager to reunite with the Brazilian, having achieved considerable success together at Bashundhara Kings.
Mohun Bagan’s interest in Robinho intensified after Greg Stewart’s contract expired last month. The Brazilian’s ability to operate on either wing or in the No. 10 role makes him an ideal replacement. His versatility could also see him form a potent attacking trio alongside existing forwards Jason Cummings and Jamie Maclaren.
While the two parties have reached an initial agreement, the finalization of Robinho’s contract hinges on his medical assessment. The club wants to ensure he is fully fit before signing off on the deal.
In a parallel development, Mohun Bagan is also looking to bolster its defensive unit. Talks are ongoing with Mumbai City FC centre-back Mehtab Singh, who is in the final year of his contract. However, no agreement has been reached yet on a suitable transfer fee.
If successful, these additions would significantly strengthen the Mariners’ squad ahead of the new ISL season, as they aim to build on their recent triumphs and remain at the summit of Indian football.
