Former World No.4 Tim Henman has noted that Carlos Alcaraz is showing more maturity in his shot-making after gaining experience at the top level. Alcaraz has qualified for the semifinals of the ongoing BNP Paribas Open and will take on Daniil Medvedev.
The Spaniard has a plethora of shots in his arsenal and in the past, it was noted that the youngster played a risky shot when he could have avoided it. However, with more experience on the tour, Henman reckons Alcaraz’s choices are improving on the court.
The Brit said on Sky Sports, “I think there is an element of maturity and experience of being on tour. When you have all those shots in your repertoire and he is a showman, he wants to be out there hitting all those shots.
“That’s where sometimes he can play the wrong shot. But I am seeing it less and less. Today was a good example. Yes, he hit a couple of ridiculous drop volleys, a couple of incredible forehands where it was 110mph plus.
“But one, he made the shots, and two, he was up 40-0 so they were at the right time. That’s what we love to see.
After Alcaraz’s straight set win against Casper Ruud, Henman said, “He just has a great spirit about him. He is an unbelievable competitor, but there he is thinking about that next round already and the excitement and opportunity of playing Cam.
Alcaraz defeated Norrie by 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to move ahead in the tournament.
The seven-time Slam champion said Tennis is all about picking the right shot in a fraction of a second.
“Tennis is about choosing the right shot in about half a second,” said Alcaraz, who finished with 19 forehand winners against Norrie. “Sometimes I just miss the shot because I didn’t choose the right one. In my mind, I have like seven, five options, sometimes it’s tricky for me to pick the right one.”
