Former World No.1 Rafael Nadal achieved everything in his glorious career. He has been an inspiration to millions of people, but he wants to be remembered as a good person from Manacor.
Nadal recently opened the Rafa Nadal Museum, which has trophies, racquets, trainers, historic images, and childhood memories.
“I want to be remembered not for my trophies, but for being a good person from Manacor.”
The Spaniard said he doesn’t want to talk about numbers however, he wants to treat people around him with respect.
“In the end, numbers are numbers. And the numbers are there. There’s no need to talk about them,” Nadal explained during the official opening of the new Rafa Nadal Academy museum. “I believe what’s important, what’s left, are the intangibles; who you are as a person, the way you’ve treated the people around you.”
Off the court, Nadal always wants to be remembered for the right reasons.
“I never thought that my persona should surpass who I am as a person,” Nadal, the former No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings said.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion said he never tried to be perfect but he tried to follow his ethics and upbringing in the best possible manner.
“I’ve never tried to be perfect, or to be a role model, really,” Nadal confessed. “I just try to do things according to my ethics and the upbringing I received, in the best way I can, and if that’s a good example for other children and young people, then that’s fantastic.”
“You can’t keep acting or pretending to be someone you’re not for so many years of your life,” he explained.
Nadal said that though he was better at playing tennis than the vast majority of players, he always wanted to be normal as a person.
“The only thing I can say that wasn’t normal, humility aside, is playing tennis. Playing tennis, yes, I was better than the vast majority. Not better than everyone, but better than most. But in life, I’m just as normal as anyone else,” said Nadal.
