Former World No.1 John McEnroe reckons it would not be guile to write off Novak Djokovic for the Roland Garros. Djokovic hasn’t played consistently this season due to injury woes and it would be difficult for him to hit the ground running.
The Serbian is now 39-years-old and had made it to the final of the Australian Open but could not cross the last hurdle against Carlos Alcaraz. Since then, Djokovic has not played consistently on the tour.
John McEnroe said on Forbes, “You’d have to say that when it looked even bleaker that he’d win another [major], the door’s opened up obviously more for [Djokovic] as well as [Alexander] Zverev, for example, and others that have been struggling.
“You talk about wide open in a way, other than the obvious guy Sinner.”
The American said World No.1 Jannik Sinner will enter the Roland Garros as a favorite.
“But to me ultimately it’s Sinner against the field, I’d take Sinner right now. But it does open the door for a bunch of other guys to make runs they weren’t ever going to potentially going to make.”
On the other hand, Andy Roddick said Novak Djokovic will make it as far as the fourth round in the French Open. The Serbian will begin his campaign against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Roddick said on his podcast, “This is going to be a weird thing to say.”
He continued: “If Novak was in form and playing great, you are going, you don’t want anything that is a massive disruptor. If Novak is short on matches, he is going to make returns. He is going to make enough returns, and he is not going to get pushed physically.
“This is not a match where he’s going to have to empty the tank in three and a half hours and have gruelling rallies. Weirdly, if you are playing badly you want that match up; if you are playing really well you don’t want the threat of someone’s serve.
“Novak is going to make enough stick returns and be able to get through service games pretty comfortably.”
Roddick then claimed: “I have Novak to round four. But Casper Ruud to the semis.”
