World No.1 Jannik Sinner defeated Sebastian Ofner by 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round in the ongoing Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome on Saturday. Sinner recently became the first player to triumph at five consecutive ATP Masters 1000 events after also winning in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo in the past six months.
Now, the Italian is looking to become the second man to complete the Career Golden Masters (winning all nine Masters 1000 events) since the series began in 1990.
Sinner dominated the game and brought his best to the court against Ofner. The Italian conceded only five unforced errors in the first set and then broke Ofner’s serve early in the second set.
“It is an amazing feel to be back,” Sinner said. “The first match, the most important thing is not to lose. The level will eventually come day by day. I am very happy to be here. Since day one, this has been a very special tournament for me. Every year when you come here, you reflect about the year a little bit, being Italian and in a year a lot of things can change. I am happy to be here.”
Sinner will next take on Alexei Popyrin in the third round.
On the other hand, Alexander Zverev bested Alexander Blockx by 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to advance to the next round. This is German’s second win against Blockx in a span of nine days.
“I was much better than I was two days ago,” said Zverev, who beat Daniel Altmaier in his Rome opener. “I think it was difficult to play pretty tennis from the baseline today because the conditions were not easy, it was very windy. But overall, I am very happy.”
Zverev will be next in action in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
