Former World No.4 Greg Rusedski has questioned Carlos Alcaraz’s inclusion with Federer, Nadal & Djokovic. Alcaraz recently won his maiden Australian Open title after beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the tournament.
The Spaniard registered a four-set victory against the Serbian at the Rod Laver Arena. With this win, Alcaraz became the youngest to complete a Career Grand Slam, at 22 years and 271 days, beating Don Budge’s long-time record.
Alcaraz has ticked the right boxes in his young career and he has definitely shown the promise to go par with Big Three – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic’s records.
However, Rusedski reckons the comparisons are ridiculous as Alcaraz still has a long way to go.
Greg Rusedski said on Off the Court podcast, “It’s ridiculous in my opinion. He’s won seven majors, he’s on the right track, but you need an impressive record to reach 20 titles. Djokovic has 24, Nadal 22, and Federer 20. Those are considerable distances.”
“He would have to win every Grand Slam tournament this year to reach 10 titles. Even if he did win every Grand Slam tournament, it would still take him at least two and a half years, so I think it’s a bit premature to include Alcaraz in the debate about the greatest player of all time. You have to define it by something: the numbers, longevity, the era you played in.”
Speaking on chasing Djokovic’s record, Alcaraz said, “I am an ambitious guy. I know it is almost impossible to break Novak’s records but I’m playing tennis for myself, for joy and I want to do great things. I want to be part of tennis history.”
Alcaraz has opted out of the Rotterdam Open.
