Russia’s Tennis sensation Daniil Medvedev is all set to create history as he will leapfrog Spain’s legend Rafael Nadal to become the ATP rank number two player.
When the rankings will be updated on 15th March, the Russian will surpass the Spaniard to write his name in the history books.
Medvedev will become the first player to be ranked in the top two of the ATP rankings other than the big four of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer in over 15 years. The last person to be ranked in the top two was Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt on 25th July 2005. Thus, Medvedev will become only the fifth top-2 player since July 2005.
Medvedev has been in sublime form in the recent past and this has helped him take giant strides in the rankings. The Russian had earlier replaced Austria’s Dominic Thiem after he had made it to the final of the Australian Open. However, he couldn’t go all the way as he lost to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
In fact, before his loss to Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open, Medvedev was on a 19-match winning streak, which helped him soar up his rankings.
As per the new rankings system of the ATP, Nadal will drop half of the 360 points and Medvedev will drop half of 45 points earned at Indian Wells 2019 on 15th March. Presently, Nadal has 9850 points under his bag whereas Medvedev has 9735 points and there is a difference of 135 points between them. Consequently, Medvedev will surpass Nadal and become World No.2.
Medvedev will become the eighth Russian player to be in the top-two rankings of the ATP. Novak Djokovic is at the numerouno position as he has 12030 points under his belt.
