World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz defeated Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday. Alcaraz registered a comprehensive 6-2, 6-3 against the Bulgarian to start his campaign on a high.
With this win, Alcaraz extended his winning streak to 13 matches in the ongoing season. Earlier in the season, Alcaraz won the Australian Open and also went all the way in the Qatar Open.
The Spaniard admitted it was always going to be a difficult clash because of the conditions and said it is tough to control the ball against Dimitrov.
“I knew it was going to be difficult with the conditions,” Alcaraz said following his second-round win. “His style is really, really dangerous and it’s always tough to control the ball when he steps on the court and he’s hitting his shots. With the wind today, it was even tougher and I think I adapted my game better and that’s why I took the match. In general, I’m really, really happy with the things that I’ve done today.”
Alcaraz came up with unbelievable shots from the baseline and even had Dimitrov applauding after he sent down a rocket cross-court forehand winner. The top seed was able to get to the next round after spending only 66 minutes.
“I love playing here. I love being here so, so much,” Alcaraz, who is a two-time Indian Wells champion, said. “I think that’s why I’m playing relaxed, playing calm, chilling, trying to enjoy every time I step on the court.”
Alcaraz next faces 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech in the third round on Monday. The Spaniard has a 5-0 record against the Frenchman in the ATP H2H record.
