Roland Garros champion Alexander Zverev bested America’s Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon on Wednesday. With this straight set victory, the German made it to his maiden Wimbledon semifinal. Zverev registered a comprehensive 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory after one hour, 59 minutes against the World no. 7.
Fritz had his wood on Zverev in the last two years but the latter was finally able to solve the American’s puzzle. With this win, Zverev became just the fifth German man in the Open Era to reach the last four at the All England Club.
“I hope to play two more matches here,” Zverev said with a smile. “But for now, I’m extremely happy to be in the semi-finals, especially against Taylor, who I haven’t [beaten] in more than two years. He’s [been] beating me for two years straight… I played a fantastic match and I’m very happy to be in the semi-finals.”
After this victory, Zverev improved to 5-10 in head-to-head battle against Fritz.
On the other hand, Arthur Fery continued his fairytale run at SW19 as he defeated Roland Garros’ runners-up Flavio Cobolli by 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0. The 23-year-old Brit became the lowest-ranked men’s singles semi-finalist at SW19 since then-World No. 125 Goran Ivanisevic won the title in 2001.
“It just seems to be getting better and better every match,” Fery said in his on-court interview. “I just can’t believe it. Incredible, playing on Centre Court for the second time, a second win. I just can’t believe it.”
Fery became the fifth British player to reach the Wimbledon’s last four in the Open Era after Roger Taylor, Tim Henman, Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie.
“I guess it’s going to be a first time and we will figure it out as we go,” Fery said when asked about his plans ahead of his clash with Zverev. “I’m just going to keep going. I’ve been doing a great job over the past 10 days. I’m just going to do the same thing and see where that takes me.”
Fery and Zverev will take on each other on Friday at Centre Court.
