Patna Pirates have named Dinesh Kharab as their new assistant coach ahead of the upcoming Pro Kabaddi League season, reinforcing their backroom staff as they look to re-establish themselves among the title contenders.
The three-time champions are aiming for greater consistency after a campaign that showed promise but ultimately ended short of the final hurdle. Kharab, a respected figure in Indian kabaddi circles, brings coaching experience and a deep understanding of tactical play. His appointment is expected to bolster the Pirates’ strategic approach, particularly in defensive organisation and match preparation.
With the Pro Kabaddi League growing increasingly competitive each year, franchises have begun investing more heavily in support staff to complement their playing squads. Patna’s decision reflects that shift, with an emphasis on sharpening structure, discipline and coordination during training camps.
Kharab will work closely with the head coach and players, contributing to tactical planning and helping nurture emerging talent — an area where the Pirates have traditionally excelled.
Last season, Patna finished seventh in the PKL 12 standings with 16 points from 18 matches, registering eight wins and 10 losses. They ended the league stage with a score difference of 10 before mounting a spirited run in the playoffs.
The Pirates defeated U Mumba 40-31 in the second play-in match at the Thyagaraj Indoor Stadium in Delhi, powered by Ayan Lohchab’s 14-point performance, which included 12 touch points, a bonus point and a tackle point. Navdeep stood out in defence with seven tackle points.
Patna then knocked out two-time champions Jaipur Pink Panthers with a commanding 48-32 victory in Eliminator 1. Ayan once again led from the front with 20 raid points, while Navdeep added six tackle points.
Their momentum continued against Bengaluru Bulls, as the Pirates secured a 46-37 win in the second Eliminator. Ayan collected 19 raid points, Ankit Kumar contributed seven raid points, and defenders Deepak and Navdeep added six and five tackle points respectively.
However, the campaign ended in Eliminator 3 with a 46-39 loss to the Telugu Titans. Bharat’s 23-point effort proved decisive, overshadowing Ayan’s 22-point display as Patna fell short in the do-or-die clash.
With Kharab now part of the setup, the Pirates will hope improved execution in crucial moments can help transform playoff promise into championship success in the season ahead.
