The summer transfer window is still in its early stages, but Tottenham have already secured one of its biggest deals.
Spurs have officially completed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham after agreeing to an £85 million ($112 million USD) club-record transfer, beating Manchester United to one of the most sought-after young midfielders in Europe.
Fernandes had emerged as one of the hottest names on the market following West Ham’s relegation, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and several other European clubs monitoring his situation. Tottenham ultimately moved decisively, agreeing both a fee with West Ham and personal terms with the Portuguese international.
The move reflects Tottenham’s commitment to backing Roberto De Zerbi as he continues rebuilding the squad after arriving earlier this year. Club officials viewed Fernandes as a priority target, believing his technical ability, tactical intelligence, and versatility make him an ideal fit for De Zerbi’s possession-based system.
Fernandes joined West Ham only last summer and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers despite a difficult campaign that ended in relegation. His maturity, consistency, and quality in midfield attracted widespread interest across Europe.
West Ham ultimately accepted Tottenham’s club-record offer, making Fernandes’ departure the biggest sale in the club’s history. The transfer also provides a major financial boost as the Hammers begin rebuilding for life in the Championship. Southampton will also benefit from the move through a 15 percent sell-on clause included in the original transfer agreement.
For Tottenham, Fernandes becomes another major addition during an aggressive summer rebuild under De Zerbi. The club has already strengthened multiple areas of the squad and views the 21-year-old as a cornerstone of its long-term midfield.
Spurs had been confident throughout negotiations that they could outmaneuver Manchester United, who were reluctant to enter another expensive bidding war. That belief proved correct as Tottenham finalized the deal and secured one of the Premier League’s most promising young midfielders.
