India’s qualification for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup marks a historic milestone for the national women’s team. For the first time, the Blue Tigresses have secured their place in the tournament purely on merit rather than through invitation or hosting rights. The achievement highlights the rapid progress of women’s football in the country and sets the stage for a promising campaign in the continental competition.
India’s journey through the qualifiers was dominant. The team remained unbeaten in its group, scoring an impressive 24 goals while conceding just once across four matches. Victories over Thailand, Timor-Leste, Iraq and Mongolia showcased the squad’s attacking strength and defensive discipline. At the heart of this success is a young generation of players who could shape India’s future on the Asian stage.
Among them is 22-year-old forward Malavika Prasad, a key attacking figure for Indian Women’s League side Sethu FC. Known for her sharp movement and finishing ability, Prasad has already earned recognition at the domestic level. The Kasargod native was named the Kerala Football Association’s Best Player in the women’s category in 2024, highlighting her growing influence in Indian football.
Another exciting prospect is 20-year-old striker Lynda Kom. Born in Manipur, she has already tasted success with Odisha FC, helping the club secure the Indian Women’s League title in 2024. Kom has also represented Sethu FC at the club level and is regarded as one of the most promising young forwards in the country.
In midfield, Sanfida Nongrum could play a vital role in controlling the tempo of India’s games. Currently captaining Indian Women’s League side Garhwal United FC, the 20-year-old has quickly developed a reputation as a composed and intelligent midfielder. Her leadership and ability to link defense with attack could prove crucial during the tournament.
Defensively, Rimpa Haldar brings a unique story and versatility to the team. The 21-year-old athlete-turned-footballer made her senior debut for India in 2024. Over the years, she has represented several clubs, including East Bengal FC, Lord’s FA, Kochi, Sarojini Naidu Orient Sports Club, Police Athletic Club and the Nadia District Sports Authority team. She currently plays for Sribhumi FC and continues to grow as a reliable defensive presence.
Completing the list is Shilky Devi Hemam, widely regarded as one of India’s finest young defenders. The 20-year-old from Manipur played a key role in Gokulam Kerala’s Indian Women’s League triumph in 2023 and was later named the league’s Best Defender in 2024.
With a talented young core and confidence gained from an impressive qualifying campaign, India will enter the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with growing belief and ambition.
