Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted they are no longer ‘first-class team’ after FIFA World Cup exit. The Germans were stunned on penalties by Paraguay in the round of 32 on Monday.
After winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup, results haven’t gone Germany’s way at the top stage in major tournaments.
Meanwhile, Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah missed penalties as Paraguay won 4-3 in the penalty shootout on Monday.
The Germans became the first big team at the tournament to be eliminated in the round of 32. Both teams played a 1-1 draw before the result was decided on penalties in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Julio Enciso scored to give Paraguay a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute, but Havertz equalised for Germany in the 54th minute. The VAR disallowed a Tah goal in extra time, which added frustration for Germany.
“If you exit after the first stage, it’s not enough for German football,” said Nagelsmann. “This is now the third elimination in a row so we are not part of the first class teams any more. I am disappointed.”
Nagelsmann added that he would continue his head coach role for Germany if the DFB wants him to carry on.
“If the DFB [German FA] wants me, I am going to continue,” he said. “I know a lot of people want me to leave, but I would love to continue if the DFB want me. I’ll give my arguments to my boss.
“If there was a survey today in Germany people aren’t going to talk about me positively, obviously. We have not done much during this tournament.
“I’m not someone who runs away.”
Germany were not able to bring their best against Paraguay and thus had to pay the price.
