Muller, Hummels named in Germany’s Euro 2020 Squad; Reus, Boateng kept out

Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels have been recalled into Germany’s 26-man squad for the Euro 2020 Championships after a two-year absence.

The duo was exiled from the German squad in 2019 as head coach Joachim Low sought to lay the base for building a young squad for the future. However, he has made a U-turn now and has called up the experienced duo taking the entire pandemic situation and lack of preparation time into account.

Hummels who represented Bayern Munich along with Muller from 2016 to 2019 showed how delighted he was by sharing his thoughts on Twitter.

“I am really happy and proud to play for Germany again,” he said.

Muller also shared his thoughts on Twitter and wrote ‘Back Again’ along with sharing his picture. The forward made his international debut for Germany back in 2010 and has gone on to make 100 appearances for the country. He has scored 38 goals as well.

Hummels, on the other hand, has played 70 matches for Germany and has netted five goals as well. Both players were a part of Low’s World Cup winning squad back in 2014.

While their return is good news, two other veterans in Marco Reus and Jerome Boateng haven’t been able to make the cut. Both players have struggled with injuries of late and hence, their absence from the squad is understandable going into such a big tournament.

The squad also consists of Chelsea duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Bernd Leno of Arsenal has also been included, who will mainly serve as a backup to Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.
