England defender Marc Guéhi has tipped Mexico as favorites for the round of 16 FIFA World Cup clash. The Three Lions will need to adjust to the conditions in Mexico City as the match would be played 2000 meters above sea level.
Meanwhile, England had a registered a thrilling 2-1 win against Congo DR in the round of 32. After conceding early in the seventh minute, England’s skipper Harry Kane scored a brace, finding the back of the net in the 75th and 86th minute.
On the other hand, Mexico claimed a 2-0 win against Ecuador in the round of 32. In the group stage, Mexico won all of their three games against South Africa, South Korea and Czechia.
“We know they’re a good team and they’ve got the fans on their side, so it’ll be going into the cauldron,” the England defender, Marc Guéhi told FIFA. “But it’ll be a fun test.
“I’d say they’re kind of favourites. They’re at home and they know the environment a lot better. They haven’t conceded so far and have got a perfect record.
“You come to these competitions to play against top teams, in top atmospheres. It’s a match we’re all looking forward to.”
Meanwhile, Mexico have lost just two of their 89 competitive matches at the Azteca and thus England will have their work cut out. Marc said it would be imperative for the team to show patience and character against the co-hosts.
“I think I know my character,” Guehi said. “It’s just how you’re able to cope in those moments.
“You start picturing in your mind what those moments are going to look like, and visualise them so that when they do come, you’re not surprised.
“It’s about trying to show those elements of your character and having personality in those moments.”
England will take on Mexico on Sunday.
