East Bengal endured a disappointing evening at the Salt Lake Stadium after being held to a goalless draw by Punjab FC in an entertaining Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 encounter on Monday.
The result came as a setback for the Kolkata giant ahead of its much-anticipated derby clash against arch-rival Mohun Bagan Super Giant on May 17. While East Bengal remained at the top of the standings with 22 points from 11 matches, the team failed to produce the cutting edge required to secure all three points at home.
Despite several opportunities at both ends, neither side managed to break the deadlock in a match that featured quality goalkeeping, near misses and late drama.
East Bengal struggled to establish attacking rhythm in the opening stages as Punjab defended in an organised manner and threatened regularly on the counterattack. The home side’s best chance of the first half arrived around the half-hour mark when Miguel Ferreira threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Bipin Singh inside the box. However, Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh reacted sharply and rushed off his line to narrow the angle before making an important save.
Punjab looked the more dangerous side for long periods and came close to taking the lead through Spanish forward Dani Ramirez. One of his efforts struck the upright while another narrowly missed the target, leaving East Bengal relieved to head into half-time level.
The visitors continued their aggressive approach after the break and forced East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill into action. The keeper produced two excellent diving saves to deny efforts from Singamayum Shami and Samir Zeljkovic as Punjab increased the pressure.
East Bengal improved in the closing stages and nearly stole victory late in the match. Mohammed Rashid attempted an ambitious long-range effort after spotting Arshdeep Singh off his line. The strike beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar, leaving the home fans stunned.
There was more late drama in stoppage time when substitute Nandhakumar Sekar fired a powerful shot that was brilliantly stopped near the goal-line by Mohammad Uvais. The rebound fell kindly to Miguel Ferreira, but his follow-up attempt drifted narrowly wide, ensuring the match finished scoreless.
Although East Bengal retained top spot in the standings, the dropped points will raise concerns before the high-pressure Kolkata derby. Punjab FC, meanwhile, continued its solid campaign and remained sixth in the table with 19 points from 11 matches.
