Lalengmawia Ralte, popularly known as Apuia, emerged the hero on Monday night, delivering a breathtaking stoppage-time goal to propel Mohun Bagan Super Giant into the Indian Super League (ISL) final with a 2-0 win over Jamshedpur FC in the second leg of the semifinal at Salt Lake Stadium.
The Mariners overturned a 1-2 deficit from the first leg to claim a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory, ensuring their third consecutive appearance in the ISL final. They will now lock horns with Bengaluru FC in the title clash, set to be played at the same venue on April 12.
With the match locked in tension and Jamshedpur defending deep, it was a moment of magic from Apuia in the fourth minute of added time (90+4) that sealed the tie and brought the packed stadium of over 50,000 roaring to life.
Mohun Bagan dominated possession and attacking play throughout but struggled to break down a disciplined and dogged Jamshedpur backline. The visitors flooded their own box with defenders, with eight to nine men frequently positioned behind the ball to thwart Bagan’s forays forward.
Jamshedpur goalkeeper Albino Gomes was in inspired form, pulling off four crucial saves and keeping his side in the contest for much of the night.
The breakthrough came shortly after the break, when Mohun Bagan were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute. Referee pointed to the spot after Jamshedpur’s Pronay Halder was adjudged to have handled the ball. Australian striker Jason Cummings made no mistake, calmly converting to level the aggregate score at 2-2.
With tension mounting, Mohun Bagan pressed hard for the winner, knowing a draw on aggregate would favour Jamshedpur based on their first-leg lead. It was then that Apuia stepped up with a stunning strike in stoppage time, ensuring the Mariners completed a spirited comeback.
The goal sent waves of relief and euphoria through the stands and the wider fanbase across Kolkata, known passionately as the City of Joy.
Now, with momentum on their side and their eyes on the prize, Mohun Bagan will prepare to face Bengaluru FC in what promises to be a high-octane ISL final.
