India’s veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has backed India to play the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy together in the upcoming T20 World Cup. With Axar Patel’s place fixed in the starting XI as a vice-captain, it would be interesting to note India’s playing combination.
Chahal said that with dew expected to be a huge factor, playing with three spinners will be tricky. Varun Chakravarthy is India’s first-choice spinner in the T20I format, and he is also the number one T20I batter in the ICC rankings.
Meanwhile, Kuldeep isn’t in the best of forms but Chahal said a wrist spinner can get the ball to turn on any kind of track.
“I would play both Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. But Axar Patel can’t be kept out. There is a fixed spot for every player. Hardik Pandya can’t be told to open the innings. He plays at six or seven. When India has a World No. 1 bowler in Varun and Axar is there is as an all-rounder, accommodating a third spinner is difficult as dew is heavy in India. It also depends upon when the matches start. If the wicket is dry, three spinners can be played. Also, wrist-spinners can turn the ball on any wicket,” Chahal said on Sports Tak.
Talking about the high-octane clash against Pakistan, Chahal said India can afford to play with three spinners as the pitch in Colombo is a spinner’s friend.
“Having played in Colombo, there is assistance for spinners, regardless of the dew. But the only question is if you want to break the combination. Kuldeep Yadav needs to play, keeping in mind that he will feature in the XI consistently because every bowler has a rhythm. But it all depends upon the management and how they want to approach these things. During the match against Pakistan, India can take a chance with three spinners.”
India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the USA on February 7.
