Would love to see Virat Kohli playing in the BBL, says Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has said he would love to see Virat Kohli play in the Big Bash League this year. Kohli recently announced his retirement from Test cricket and had earlier announced his retirement from T20I format in 2024 after India won the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Indian women cricketers like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues have consistently played the WBBL over the years.

But BCCI restricts India’s men players from taking part in other leagues to protect the integrity of its domestic cricket, especially the IPL.

“We would love to welcome some Indian players to the BBL. That’s certainly some conversations that we will continue to have with the BCCI I would love to see Virat Kohli playing in the BBL this year,” Greenberg said while speaking to the media during an interaction organised by Cricket Australia.

“That would certainly create some interest in crowds and ratings, I’m sure, but at the moment, that’s not happening, but we do have our ambitions to do those types of things,” Greenberg added.

Kohli is a big name and his presence in the Big Bash League will be huge for the tournament. But the BCCI is unlikely to change its rule of allowing the Indian players to take part in foreign leagues.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli top-scored with 43 runs off 35 balls in the final of IPL 2025 against Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Tuesday. After being put into bat, RCB posted 190 runs on the board in the summit clash.

PBKS need 101 runs off 52 balls to win their maiden IPL title with seven wickets in hand.
