Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has urged Chennai Super Kings to come up with a collective batting performance after their resounding 103-run win against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday.
CSK opener Sanju Samson was the lone warrior with the bat, scoring 101 runs off just 54 balls with the help of 10 fours and six maximums. Thus, he played an instrumental role in helping CSK post a par score of 207 runs on the board.
However, none of the other CSK batters could even breach the 25-run mark and Sehwag wants the other batters to take onus on their shoulders.
“We are praising Chennai now but only one batter is scoring right now. The day he fails and others do not score, it will be the same story for them again. You cannot be dependent on one batter. Mhatre was scoring but he is out. They will hope for Gaikwad, Dube, Brevis and these guys to come to form and support Samson,” he said on Cricbuzz.
Sehwag praised Samson for successfully converting his start and playing with maturity against MI.
“Either he gets out within 10 runs or he scores big if a gets a start. It is a good thing that he converts the starts. Regular wickets were falling in this game so he had to play with a little responsibility as well. But it was a brilliant knock. He quietly did his job and it was very smooth.”
On the other hand, former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma said it was a complete failure for Mumbai Indians as they could not challenge CSK in any department and were totally outplayed by the visitors.
“In the game that they won also, only Tilak had scored. It was a proper complete failure. If Mumbai have to step up, their senior players have to move forward, the extra responsibility is on them. How Surya scores, how the captain makes decisions and keeps his performance with that, all this will have to be seen,” he said. (via the aforementioned source)
Mumbai Indians will next take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Wednesday.
