Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron believes Zimbabwe is going to cause at least one upset in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. Sikandar Raza’s team has been unbeaten so far in the tournament and topped Group B after three wins in four matches and one no-result.
Zimbabwe also stunned Australia by 23 runs in the group stage and also bested co-hosts Sri Lanka by six wickets on Thursday. The African nation is in fine form and would want to carry the good show in the Super 8 stage.
Varun Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo, “They are going to cause at least one upset. Now it depends on the day who that upset is going to be. We just hope it’s not India. But, Zimbabwe are going to come into the Super 8s with a lot of belief. They are in a period of resurgence and there’s going to be a lot of confidence along with a nothing to lose attitude. I think it’s going to be a very dangerous combination.”
On the other hand, former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar said Australia’s elimination had come as a big surprise, and Zimbabwe will pose a huge threat.
“It came as a big surprise that Australia were knocked out. I think Zimbabwe have a team which can pose threat. I’m not so convinced as yet that they’ll cause an upset. I base my premise on the batting depth. That has not come to the fore yet. You’ve got some very good innings from [Brian] Bennett, a couple of impactful knocks from [Ryan] Burl. But you don’t see runs coming.”
Zimbabwe will begin their Super 8 stage against the West Indies on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
