Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron believes Suryakumar Yadav’s drop catch was the biggest turning point of the match between India and the USA at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday. SKY was on only 15 when USA seamer Shubman Ranjane could not hold on to a caught-and-bowl chance.
The Indian captain went on to score a match-winning knock of 84 runs off just 49 balls and the drop catch proved costly for the Americans. India was able to post a par score of 161 on the board as SKY was the lone warrior for the team.
Varun Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo, “Dropping Surya at 15 was the biggest moment of the game for me. If they had Surya out early, we could have seen a very different score. They could have had a very different approach to their batting. They would have had a more measured approach rather than going hell for leather.”
On the other hand, former Indian skipper Anil Kumble also concurred with Aaron and said USA had a great opportunity to put more pressure on India.
“USA had a great opportunity. They certainly had more than 50 percent chance to beat India today. USA will rue that. That was certainly the biggest moment of the match because India could have gone probably 120-130 from thereon. Most of the other batters struggles.”
After the match, SKY admitted that they could have batted a little better.
He said in the post-match presentation, “We could have batted a little better. I think after winning also, you get to learn a lot of things. And today we learned that we could have batted a little better or maybe a little smarter. Those small, small partnerships could have got us to 160 rather than one batter or two batter trying to play it till the end.”
India will next take on Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on February 12.
