Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has questioned Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy after India suffered a gargantuan loss of 76 runs against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday. Aaron questioned why Washington Sundar was given only two overs by SKY.
Sundar returned with figures of 0-17 in two overs he bowled. The off-spinner was added to the team’s playing XI ahead of Axar Patel, keeping in mind the number of left-handers in South Africa’s side but the move didn’t pay rich dividends.
Meanwhile, India’s talismanic spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, had an off day at the office, conceding 47 runs in four overs he bowled.
Varun Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo, “Washington Sundar went for 11 in his first over. No worries, anybody can go for 11. But, he came back and gave you a six-run over. Why didn’t you give Washington Sundar another over? You’ve played him as a proper bowler. You’ve got to give the proper bowler another over.”
Aaron noted that India has adopted a very measured approach in the ongoing World Cup but feels the do or die situation can help the team in turning the tables.
“This might work in India’s favor because we’ve been seeing a very different approach from the way they have been playing their T20 cricket over the last two years. It’s been slightly measured. They have to go in with a ‘go hard or go home’ approach against Zimbabwe. So, we are hoping this just might be the game where India hit their straps.”
India was bowled out for 111 after they were given a target of 188. None of the Indian batters, barring Shivam Dube, could show much resistance.
India will next take on Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.
