Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has shed light on Shubman Gill’s knock after India suffered a four-wicket loss against England at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Thursday. Aaron said Gill would have come with a thought of scoring a century in the second game.
Gill gave a brisk start to the team, scoring fluent drives in 31 runs off 30 balls with the help of six fours. The flamboyant batter unfortunately smoked the ball straight to cover, Ben Duckett and he was gutted after his dismissal. India was eventually bowled out for 233, which turned out to be a below-par score.
Earlier, Gill had scored a brilliant knock of 80 runs in the opening ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Tuesday.
“An extremely soft dismissal, and if you see Shubman Gill’s reaction as well after the wicket, he was extremely disappointed with himself. He was unbeaten in the last match. He had to go out due to cramps. So he would have come with the thought process of scoring a hundred today (Thursday),” Varun Aaron said on JioHotstar.
“He was batting absolutely flawlessly. There was no mistake. He was punishing every single bad ball and defending the good balls. So, Shubman Gill could have gotten out only because of his own mistake, and he got out,” Aaron observed.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma was dismissed after scoring a rusty knock of 26 runs off 47 balls. Former Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel highlighted that it looked Rohit and Gill were batting on different track as the latter was timing the ball to perfection.
“The way Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma were batting, it seemed like both were batting on different pitches. When you are in form, your feet move properly, your selection of the balls is right, and your shot selection is also right. All those things are going with Shubman Gill currently,” he said.
Patel added that Gill would be extremely disappointed after he could not convert his start to a substantial score.
“That’s why he will be even more disappointed because he had gotten a start. When you are playing in England and the ball is moving a little, once you get a start, you want to build on it. The timing was excellent, but the ball went straight to hand,” Parthiv observed.
The decider of the three-match series between England and India will be played at Lord’s on Sunday.
