It has been reported by Indian Express that Suryakumar Yadav is all set to be removed as India’s T20I captain and also the team after IPL 2026. SKY had a dismal run in IPL 2026 for Mumbai Indians with the bat and the pressure is surely building on him.
The veteran batter could only manage 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54 in IPL 2026 and thus could not deliver the goods for the five-time champions. But, SKY had led India to the T20 World Cup glory.
However, barring scoring a fine knock of 84 runs in the T20 World Cup opener against the USA, SKY could not much of notice in the tournament. The right-hander scored 242 runs in nine matches of the T20I showpiece 30.25 and a strike rate of 136.72.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on. Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
“He won’t be considered for selection, and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon,” the official added.
In-form players like Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar are waiting in the wings for a position in India’s middle order. Furthemore, Iyer is a serious candidate to take over the captaincy baton from Suryakumar Yadav.
In 2025, SKY could only manage 218 runs in 19 T20I innings at an average of 13.63 and a strike rate of 123.16.
