The Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel has named India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup, the board announced on Tuesday. Suryakumar Yadav holds his place in the ODI team despite not grabbing his opportunities in the recent past. Tilak Varma, who was given his maiden ODI call-up for the Asia Cup, has been left out.
Furthermore, there is no place for leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who had failed to make it to the Asia Cup squad. Earlier, Rohit Sharma had mentioned that they wanted depth in their batting line-up and thus had to leave out Chahal.
Sanju Samson, who is a traveling reserve with the team for the ongoing Asia Cup, failed to make his place in the team. Prasidh Krishna also could not make it to the World Cup team.
Jasprit Bumrah, who was recently blessed with a baby boy, has been named in the squad along with Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur.
KL Rahul retains his place in the team as he is expected to regain full fitness soon. Moreover, Ishan Kishan made the cut into the squad after his impressive knock of 82 runs against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
Rohit Sharma will lead the squad whereas Hardik Pandya will be his deputy. Shreyas Iyer has also been included in India’s 15-man squad.
India will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on October 8. The Rohit Sharm-led team will look to end their major ICC title drought by going all the way in the home event.
