Sunrisers Hyderabad scripted a stunning run chase to defeat Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, overshadowing a brilliant maiden century from Ryan Rickelton.
Rickelton’s unbeaten 123 off just 55 balls powered Mumbai to a formidable 243 for five, their highest total of the season. The South African opener, brought in as a replacement for Quinton de Kock, wasted no time making an impact. He raced to a half-century in 23 balls and reached his hundred in only 44 deliveries, showcasing clean and aggressive stroke play throughout his innings.
Supported early by Will Jacks, the duo added 93 runs for the opening wicket, helping Mumbai post 78 without loss in the PowerPlay. Despite quick wickets falling later, including Suryakumar Yadav cheaply, Rickelton kept the momentum alive. A late flourish from Hardik Pandya, who struck 31 off 15 balls, ensured Mumbai crossed the 200-run mark comfortably.
However, the massive total proved insufficient against a relentless Hyderabad batting unit. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma came out all guns blazing, putting together a match-defining 129-run opening partnership. Their aggressive approach saw SRH rack up 92 runs in the PowerPlay, keeping the required rate firmly under control.
Head, who had endured a quiet tournament so far, smashed 76 off just 30 balls, while Abhishek continued his consistent run before both fell in quick succession to A.M. Ghazanfar. Despite the brief setback, Heinrich Klaasen ensured there were no late nerves with a composed unbeaten 65 off 30 deliveries, guiding SRH home with eight balls to spare.
Mumbai’s struggles in the field added to their woes, with missed chances proving costly in such a high-scoring encounter. The defeat marked their sixth loss in eight matches, leaving them on the verge of elimination from the playoff race.
For Hyderabad, the victory extended their winning streak to five matches and reinforced their position as strong contenders this season. The successful chase also stands as their highest against Mumbai, underlining their dominance in a game defined by explosive batting performances.
