Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has shunned the idea of Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy. According to recent reports, there are speculations that Rohit could decide to retire from ODIs if India doesn’t win the Champions Trophy.
According to PTI, chief selector Ajit Agarkar is also expected to meet Rohit Sharma to discuss his ODI future. Rohit hasn’t yet got a big score in the Champions Trophy and has amassed 104 runs in four matches at an average of 26.
Rohit had called time on his T20I career after leading India to glory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and with the next ODI World Cup still two years away, it would be interesting to note Rohit Sharma’s decision.
“Why is there talk of Rohit Sharma’s retirement? Why is this even a question? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I don’t know what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is playing very well. India is far better than New Zealand. India played in the 2023 World Cup finals, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and they are still unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same team will play,” Sourav Ganguly told media on Saturday.
On the other hand, Ganguly backed India as favorite for the summit clash of the tournament against New Zealand. India had beaten New Zealand by 44 runs in the group stage of the Champions Trophy.
“India is the favourite. India is in good form. Everyone is in very good form. Virat Kohli is there, Shubman Gill is there, Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul – everyone is in good shape. It will be a good match. India’s bowling lineup is very good. Anyone can win, anyone can lose,” Ganguly said.
Rohit will join Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni as Indian captains to have won the Champions Trophy if the Men in Blue beat the Kiwis on Sunday.
