India captain Shubman Gill has surged to second place in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings after a prolific series against Afghanistan, while New Zealand pacer Matt Henry has climbed to the top of the Test bowling rankings alongside India’s Jasprit Bumrah.
Gill moved up three places after scoring 84 and 154 in the opening two matches of India’s recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. Although he did not bat in the third ODI, which India won by nine wickets, his performances significantly narrowed the gap to the top-ranked batter, New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. Gill now trails Mitchell by just 24 rating points.
The latest rankings also brought mixed fortunes for India’s batting unit. Ishan Kishan registered the biggest jump among Indian batters, climbing 21 places to 43rd. Shreyas Iyer improved one position to 14th, while KL Rahul slipped two spots to 11th.
Virat Kohli dropped to third in the ODI batting rankings after missing the Afghanistan series because of a hamstring injury. Rohit Sharma retained his fourth-place position.
India’s bowlers also made notable gains in the ODI rankings. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh rose 16 places to 22nd, while Prasidh Krishna climbed 34 positions to reach 58th. All-rounder Washington Sundar also made significant progress, moving up 17 places to joint 71st.
In the Test rankings, Matt Henry’s outstanding performance against England earned him a share of the No. 1 bowling ranking with Bumrah. The New Zealand fast bowler claimed 11 wickets, including five-wicket hauls in both innings of the second Test, helping his side register a commanding 253-run victory and level the three-match World Test Championship series 1-1.
According to the ICC, Henry has become only the third New Zealander to reach the top of the Test bowling rankings, joining Jack Cowie and Richard Hadlee. His rise also ends a 36-year wait for a New Zealand fast bowler to occupy the premier position.
Bumrah had held the No. 1 ranking outright since overtaking South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada in November 2024. Henry’s remarkable performance against England has now seen the two pace bowlers share the summit.
Meanwhile, England’s stand-in captain Joe Root reclaimed the No. 1 position in the ICC Test batting rankings after climbing two places in the latest update.
