Riyan Parag Faces Potential Sanction for Heated Reaction in IPL Clash Against Gujarat Titans

Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag could be staring at disciplinary action following a fiery on-field reaction to his dismissal during the IPL 2025 encounter against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.

The incident unfolded in the seventh over of Rajasthan Royals’ 218-run chase. Parag, looking in good touch, was adjudged caught behind off the bowling of left-arm pacer Kulwant Khejroliya. Believing he hadn’t edged the ball, Parag immediately opted for a review, arguing that the noise had come from his bat scraping the ground.

However, Ultra-Edge technology confirmed a clear spike as the ball passed the bat, prompting the third umpire to uphold the on-field decision. What followed could potentially land Parag in hot water with the IPL’s disciplinary committee.

The 22-year-old batter was seen arguing with the on-field umpire, visibly unhappy despite the replay evidence. As he walked off, his frustration boiled over. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was seen intervening to calm Parag down. Instead of heading directly to the dugout, Parag walked up the stairs and angrily smashed his bat near the team entrance — an act that did not go unnoticed by match officials and fans alike.

This conduct appears to breach Article 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a match.” The clause outlines unacceptable actions such as arguing, delaying exit from the field, and displaying visible anger — all of which Parag seemingly displayed.

A formal review is expected by the match referee, who will determine whether Parag’s actions merit a charge. If found guilty, he could face a fine ranging from 25% to 50% of his match fee and at least one demerit point. Accumulation of such points over the season can eventually lead to suspension.

This is not Parag’s first brush with controversy, but with the league increasingly focused on upholding standards of conduct, sanctions appear likely. Already this season, several players including Digvesh Singh Rathi, Glenn Maxwell, and Ishant Sharma have faced penalties for code violations.

As IPL 2025 intensifies, Parag’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure — both in the heat of competition and under the scrutiny of technology. The final decision on his fate now rests with the match officials.
