Mitchell Starc Opts Out of IPL 2025 Resumption, Blow to Delhi Capitals’ Playoff Push

Delhi Capitals have suffered a major setback ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 resumption, with ace Australian pacer Mitchell Starc deciding not to return to India for the remainder of the tournament, according to reports. His withdrawal comes just days before the IPL is set to restart on May 17, following a temporary suspension due to rising cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

Starc has been a standout performer for the Capitals this season, leading the team’s bowling charts with 14 wickets in 11 matches. His fiery spells and ability to strike early proved pivotal in Delhi’s campaign so far. With his absence, Delhi not only loses its most consistent bowler but also a seasoned campaigner in crunch situations.

While the exact reasons for Starc’s decision remain undisclosed, it is understood that the move provides him with a longer preparation window ahead of the World Test Championship final, a priority for Cricket Australia. His focus now shifts to the red-ball format as Australia eyes another global title.

The IPL will resume with Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 17. This fixture marks the beginning of the final leg of the tournament, with 13 league matches left to be played across six approved venues.

Delhi Capitals will return to action on May 18, hosting Gujarat Titans in what could be a decisive clash in the race for the playoffs. DC currently sits fifth on the points table and remains firmly in contention for a top-four finish. However, the loss of Starc will force the team management to rethink its bowling combination and possibly turn to its bench strength or overseas backups.

Despite Starc’s absence, the Australian contingent won’t be entirely missing from the IPL restart. Fellow pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have confirmed their return for the remainder of the season, providing a boost to their respective franchises and maintaining Australia’s presence in the league.

The IPL, known for its broad reach and massive fan engagement, remains a powerful sporting event with significant influence. As it resumes amidst geopolitical sensitivities, franchises and fans alike will be watching closely to see how the rest of the season unfolds — and whether Delhi Capitals can overcome this setback in pursuit of their elusive maiden title.
