Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings are mounting one of the most impressive comebacks of all time in the IPL. Sunday’s victory over Lucknow Super Giants marked CSK’s third successive win and pushed them firmly back into playoff contention after a disastrous start to the campaign.
A month ago, Chennai looked completely out of sorts. Three defeats from their opening three matches had left them rooted to the bottom of the table on April 5, with questions swirling around almost every aspect of the side. Big-name signings had failed to fire, the bowling lacked bite, and the overall energy around the squad appeared worryingly flat.
At that stage, even loyal CSK supporters were beginning to wonder whether the season was slipping away too early.
But in typical Chennai fashion, the turnaround has been built on patience, experience, and a handful of players stepping up at exactly the right time.
The catalyst for the revival was the resurgence of Sanju Samson. After a quiet start to the tournament, the marquee signing exploded into life with a breath-taking unbeaten 115 off just 56 balls, instantly changing the mood in the camp. His return to form was accompanied by a remarkable improvement in CSK’s bowling attack, particularly through the performances of Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad and Jamie Overton.
Kamboj and Overton, in particular, have adapted brilliantly to the batter-friendly conditions that have dominated this IPL season. Rather than relying purely on pace, both bowlers have used variations, changes of speed and smart tactical execution to consistently keep opposition batters under pressure.
Their impact was first felt in a morale-boosting win over Delhi Capitals, a result that finally gave Chennai their first points of the season. Another victory followed against Kolkata Knight Riders, beaten comfortably by 32 runs as CSK’s confidence began to return.
There was disappointment when Chennai narrowly fell 10 runs short against Sunrisers Hyderabad while chasing 194, but even in defeat there were signs that the side was finding rhythm. Unfortunately, that game also brought a major setback with young star Ayush Mhatre suffering an injury after a superb 59 off 36 balls. Coach Stephen Fleming described the loss as a “big, big blow.”
Yet Chennai continued to push forward.
Samson once again carried the batting in a high-scoring win over Mumbai Indians, smashing 101 out of a team total of 207. Meanwhile, the bowling unit kept delivering. Noor Ahmad maintained his consistency, Overton continued producing key breakthroughs, and Akeal Hosein chipped in economically to strengthen the attack further.
Even a subsequent defeat to Gujarat Titans could not derail the momentum completely. CSK responded with a hat-trick of victories that has transformed them from strugglers into genuine playoff contenders.
Two dominant eight-wicket wins laid the foundation before Sunday’s thrilling success against Lucknow. This time, it was Urvil Patel who stole the spotlight with a sensational 65 off just 23 deliveries. His innings featured eight sixes and began in astonishing fashion: 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 6. It was the sort of fearless innings that can define a campaign.
The bigger picture is even more encouraging for CSK. Despite their recent surge, several major players are still yet to fully contribute. T20 World Cup winner Shivam Dube has not found top form, while overseas signing Dewald Brevis is also still searching for consistency.
That means CSK may still have another gear left.
Samson, with 430 runs, has undoubtedly carried the batting lineup and justified the franchise’s faith in him after his move from Rajasthan Royals. But the real backbone of this resurgence has arguably been the bowling trio of Kamboj, Overton and Noor Ahmad.
Kamboj’s 19 wickets have come through intelligence and control rather than raw pace. Overton, perhaps an underrated overseas acquisition at the start of the season, has combined crucial wickets with valuable lower-order runs. His Player-of-the-Match display against Lucknow was another reminder of how influential he has become.
With matches against LSG, SRH and GT still remaining, Chennai’s playoff destiny is now firmly in their own hands. Two more wins could be enough to secure qualification. Three from three would guarantee it.
And if CSK do complete the job, it will rank among the most dramatic mid-season revivals in the history of one of the IPL’s most successful franchises.
