Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori has showered praise on Todd Murphy for his impressive performances in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Test series against India. Murphy, who made his Test debut in Nagpur, has been able to hit the ground running in the tough Indian conditions.
The off-spinner has bowled in the right areas and he has bowled with the right pace on the Indian pitches, which has helped reap rewards. Murphy has scalped 11 wickets in three Test matches at an average of 21.82. Furthermore, the 22-year-old from Victoria has dismissed Virat Kohli on three occasions in the series.
Furthermore, Murphy bowled an economical spell in the second innings of the Indore Test as he conceded only 18 runs in the 14 overs he bowled.
“Steve Smith singled him out around his performances in the last Test. His spell allowed everyone around him to take those wickets. The fact that Kohli had never been stumped before that Test match in Delhi when Murphy got him out,” said Vettori while speaking to Perth Now.
“For such a young spinner, and inexperienced spinners as well, he hasn’t played that much first-class cricket to be able to come here and handle these tough situations and perform the role that’s required has been impressive,” Vettori added.
On the other hand, the former New Zealand skipper went on to shower praise on Nathan Lyon, who scalped 11 wickets in Indore, including 8-64 in the second essay.
“Ever since I’ve started watching Lyon bowl I’ve marveled at him. As a fellow finger-spinner who can’t do what he did, there’s always that element of his ability to bowl that ball which is so impressive. We saw him at his absolute best in this Test,” said Vettori.
Australian spin trio of Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, and Matthew Kuhnemann were brilliant in the third Test match and all of them will want to continue the good show.
The fourth Test match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad from Thursday onwards.
