Harshit Rana’s path to India’s Test squad for the upcoming Australia tour is an inspiring tale of determination and transformation. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer recently opened up about the journey that propelled him onto the selectors’ radar, a journey defined not just by raw talent but by an intense commitment to fitness that saw him shed 17 kilograms in under five months.
“Missing an entire Ranji Trophy season because of a hamstring injury was my wake-up call. I realized I needed to give everything to my fitness if I wanted a shot at playing for India,” Harshit shared with The Indian Express.
The 22-year-old had suffered a string of injuries throughout his teenage years, from back and groin strains to calf and shoulder issues. Yet, it was his father, Pradeep Rana, a former CRPF athlete, who kept him grounded through each setback. “This call-up to the Indian team is for him,” Harshit said.
Pradeep, who witnessed his son’s battle with injuries and self-doubt, remembers the countless hospital visits, specialist consultations, and even Ayurvedic treatments in Najafgarh. “Every part of his body was injured at some point,” he recounted. “We just left it to destiny after a while.” But fate had other plans.
Harshit found his turning point during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, watching Indian players withstand physical pain to secure a historic victory in Australia. Inspired by Pujara’s stoic resilience and Ashwin’s determination to bat through back pain, Harshit made a crucial decision.
“That series made me more determined to play for the country,” he said. He channeled that inspiration into rigorous fitness routines, dropping 17 kilograms from November 2023 to March 2024, just in time for the IPL season.
Harshit’s transformation not only revived his physical stamina but also his mental resilience. “I’ve been injury-free for seven months now, and it’s a huge relief. It feels like the weight loss gave me a fresh start,” he admitted. His disciplined fitness regime translated into standout performances in the 2024 IPL, where his sharp bowling and consistent pace for KKR caught the eye of selectors.
Today, Harshit’s selection in India’s Test squad for the Australia series is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, one he once envisioned on early winter mornings watching India’s overseas matches. Though his father’s dream is to see him bowl in England, Harshit has always wanted to play against Australia. “They play the same brand of cricket as I do — aggressive and intense,” he noted.
