Harshit Rana Released from India Test Squad to Lead Delhi’s Bowling Attack in Ranji Trophy

Emerging pacer Harshit Rana, part of India’s Test squad as a traveling reserve, has been released to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season for Delhi. The 22-year-old right-arm fast bowler will feature in Delhi’s upcoming home match against Assam, scheduled to begin on Saturday, October 26, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Rana, who was close to making his international debut during India’s recent T20I series against Bangladesh, will now focus on strengthening Delhi’s struggling bowling unit. The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) reportedly requested Rana’s release from the national setup due to their ongoing bowling crisis.

According to the Times of India, Delhi is missing key players, including veteran pacer Navdeep Saini, who is with the India A squad for the Australia tour.

Rana’s return comes as a significant boost for Delhi, who have been grappling with injuries and form issues after two disappointing draws in their first two matches this season. Following a draw with Chhattisgarh, Delhi faced a tough encounter against Tamil Nadu, leaving them fifth in the group standings.

Rana last featured in red-ball cricket during the Duleep Trophy, where he put in an impressive performance, taking eight wickets in two matches for India D. His steady rise as a promising fast bowler was further cemented by a successful 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Kolkata Knight Riders, where he caught the attention of national selectors.

With veteran Ishant Sharma left out of Delhi’s squad this season, Rana will be tasked with leading the pace attack. His ability to generate pace and movement will be crucial as Delhi looks to revive their season. The absence of Navdeep Saini adds to the pressure on Rana to deliver in the upcoming fixture.

Other members of India’s reserve players have also been released ahead of international commitments. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who recently featured for Andhra, is preparing for India A’s tour of Australia. Meanwhile, speedster Mayank Yadav has been released in advance of the four-match T20I series against South Africa.

As Delhi eyes a resurgence in their Ranji Trophy campaign, Rana’s inclusion will be pivotal in their home clash against Assam. With a fresh opportunity to show his skills on the domestic stage, all eyes will be on the young pacer to make an impact.
