England will take on India in the second ODI of the series at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Thursday. While the home team would look to stay afloat in the series, the visitors would look to seal the series after a disappointing T20I leg against Ireland and England.
There were a lot of positives for India in the last match, with bowling being the biggest one. Bumrah returned to ODI cricket like he never left whereas Prasidh Krishna and greenhorn pacer Gurnoor Brar also impressed.
On the batting front, Shubman Gill batted like a dream as he scored a fluent knock of 80 runs whereas Axar Patel and Washington Sundar scored 57 and 52 runs respectively to get India over the line in the run chase. Furthermore, Patel returned with impressive figures of 4-62 in his spell and thus was awarded Player of the Match for his all-round performance.
However, veteran batters – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – were dismissed cheaply and it would be crucial for India that these two keep scoring runs.
On the other hand, England lost wickets in a cluster after a decent start in the series opener. Joe Root and Liam Dawson were able to do the rebuilding work with fighting fifties but a score of 258 was always going to be below-par.
England last beat India in an ODI four years ago and they would look to turn a corner against the tourists.
