Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways, bringing an end to one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to a statement released by the franchise, the decision followed a series of open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management and was reached with mutual respect and gratitude.
Fleming’s departure comes after a difficult period for the five-time IPL champions, who have failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons following their title-winning campaign in 2023. The former New Zealand captain had faced increasing scrutiny as the team struggled to keep pace with the evolving demands of T20 cricket.
Having joined CSK as a player during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Fleming took over as head coach in 2009 and went on to oversee the most successful era in the franchise’s history. Under his guidance, Chennai Super Kings won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns, reached the playoffs a record 12 times and appeared in 10 IPL finals.
In recent years, however, questions had been raised over Fleming’s legacy, with all five IPL triumphs coming under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Fleming also served as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, although neither franchise has won a title during his tenure. The announcement follows Texas Super Kings’ last-place finish in this year’s MLC season.
Paying tribute to Fleming, CSK owner Rupa Gurunath said: “Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.”
“On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.”
Managing Director KS Viswanathan credited Fleming with establishing the club’s culture.
“From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths,” he said.
Reflecting on his time with the franchise, Fleming said: “Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved.”
“Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”
