James Harden has reportedly agreed to a new three-year, $97 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers, keeping the veteran guard with the team following his successful first season in Cleveland.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the agreement includes a player option for Harden in the third year. The new contract provides the 11-time All-Star with the longer-term security he was seeking after opting out of his player option for the 2026-27 season in June.
Harden arrived in Cleveland last season through a trade deadline deal with the LA Clippers. He quickly took on a major role in the Cavaliers’ offense, operating as the team’s primary playmaker alongside Donovan Mitchell.
The 2018 Kia NBA MVP showed that he could still deliver significant production, averaging 23.6 points, 8.0 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game during the regular season.
His addition also helped Cleveland put together a strong postseason run. The Cavaliers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, putting themselves within one series of reaching the NBA Finals.
Their playoff campaign ultimately ended in disappointment, however. Cleveland was swept in the conference finals by the New York Knicks, who went on to win the NBA championship.
Despite the difficult finish, bringing Harden back gives the Cavaliers continuity around one of the key figures in their offense. Unlike last season, when he joined Cleveland midway through the campaign, Harden will now have an entire offseason to work with his teammates and further develop his partnership with Mitchell.
The Cavaliers will also have more time to determine how their new additions fit alongside the established members of the lineup before beginning another push for the Eastern Conference title.
For Harden, the agreement removes the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future after his decision to decline his previous option and enter the offseason seeking a longer commitment.
Cleveland, meanwhile, retains an experienced scorer and playmaker who became central to its attack soon after arriving from Los Angeles.
After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals last season, expectations will again be high for the Cavaliers. With Harden set to return and a full offseason available to build chemistry, Cleveland will be aiming to go further in the playoffs and challenge for an NBA championship.
