India’s campaign at the Thomas Cup 2026 came to an end in Horsens, Denmark, with a 0-3 semifinal defeat to France, forcing the former champion to settle for a bronze medal.
Missing key player Lakshya Sen due to an elbow injury, India faced an uphill battle from the outset. The responsibility of leading the singles charge fell on 20-year-old Ayush Shetty, who was up against World No. 4 Christo Popov. The Frenchman proved too strong, cruising to a straight-games victory of 21-11, 21-9 in just 39 minutes.
Ayush later admitted he was outplayed. “My overall game plan was not right. He just outclassed me today,” he said, acknowledging Popov’s control over rallies and pace.
India’s hopes then rested on experienced campaigner Kidambi Srikanth. Facing World No. 10 Alex Lanier, Srikanth showed resilience but fell short, losing 21-16, 21-18 in a competitive contest that pushed France closer to the final.
In the decisive third singles, H. S. Prannoy started brightly against World No. 17 Toma Junior Popov. Prannoy led for most of the opening game but faltered at a crucial stage, allowing Popov to snatch it 21-18. Carrying the momentum forward, the French player sealed the second game 21-16, completing a clean sweep for his team.
The defeat also meant India’s top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty never got a chance to influence the tie, as the contest was decided in the singles matches.
Despite the disappointment, India’s bronze adds to its growing legacy in the tournament, marking its fifth medal in the men’s team event, with previous podium finishes dating back to 1952, 1955 and 1979.
France, meanwhile, reached its maiden Thomas Cup final, where it will face defending champion China. In the other semifinal, China defeated Denmark 3-0, highlighted by victories from Shi Yuqi and Li Shi Feng.
While India exits the tournament earlier than hoped, the campaign still reflects steady progress on the global stage.
