America’s Taylor Fritz defeated Spain’s Rafael Jodar to win the Washington Open title. The American bested the Spaniard by 7-6(2), 6-4 on Monday after the final was shifted to a weekday after rain played killjoy on Sunday.

Fritz and Jodar both dominated on serve in the first set but the former was able to draw first blood in the tiebreaker. The home favorite then took a 3-0 lead in the second set and got the job done.

Fritz converted his fifth match point after one hour and 49 minutes and won his first above ATP 250 level in nearly four years on Monday.

The American gave his gratitude to all the fans in the stadium after the win.

“Thank you guys for everything,” Fritz said to his team during the trophy ceremony. “I have given this speech a lot recently but not as a winner, so it is nice to actually mean it a little bit more this time. Thank you so much for everything you do, staying on top of me all the time. I know it is not easy.”

On the other hand, Rafael Jodar has broken into the Top 20 for the first time after another impressive week. The 19-year-old was playing in just his second tour-level final.

The Spaniard is looking to become just the third player, after Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz, to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals one year after competing at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Fritz was all praise for the youngster for taking giants strides on the tour.

“It was a really tough final and you are having an amazing season and at 19, on your first season on Tour, what you and your dad are doing is just incredible,” Fritz said to Jodar. “You are so young and are only going to get so much better.”
