ATP player Tallon Griekspoor slammed Alexander Zverev’s excessive ball bouncing at the US Open. The German won his second Slam of the year and career after beating home favorite Ben Shelton in four sets in the final.

However, Zverev received flak for taking a lot of time before his serve and for bouncing the ball a lot before lobbing it for serve. Griekspoor also called the US Open final between Zverev and Shelton at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York as mediocre. The Dutch player said Shelton was not consistent and gave away easy two-three points in every game.

Tallon Griekspoor said in the press conference at the Davis Cup, “I found the match rather mediocre. Shelton played very inconsistently and gave away two or three free points per game. You see what a first Slam final can do to a player. Zverev wasn’t exceptional, but he served really well. The second set tie-break was crucial.”

He added, “There were other sports going on, and I simply had a hard time watching Zverev. Especially in this tournament, where he bounced the ball 400 times before every serve. It was really extreme, but it obviously helped him. Maybe I should do the same.”

Zverev, who made it to the final of three out of the four Slams this year, himself admitted that he took more time before serving.

“I think I have to criticise myself. It was a bit extreme this tournament. Normally I am one of the faster players, I don’t usually take my time. But it was a bit extreme, I have to admit that.”

Zverev is scheduled to next play at the Laver Cup whereas Shelton is playing at the Davis Cup for the USA.
