Renowned Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou reckons Jannik Sinner might have a slight edge against Carlos Alcaraz in the ongoing US Open. The French coach said the duo is now the favorites for all four Slams of the year.
While Alcaraz won his first-round match against Reilly Opelka on Monday in straight sets, Sinner will kick-start his title defense against Vit Kopriva on Tuesday.
Mouratoglou believes the Wimbledon final win will give a lot of confidence to Sinner while facing Alcaraz. The duo can potentially meet each other in the final of the New York Major.
He said on Instagram: “At the moment, there are two favourites for every Grand Slam. It’s Alcaraz and Sinner.
“I think this victory of Sinner in Wimbledon was extremely important, because it was five times in a row that Alcaraz beat him before that.
“Now it’s completely different. He has the taste of beating him in a Grand Slam final. So this will give an edge to Sinner.
“But they are so close in terms of level with completely different games, completely different ways to handle situations. If they keep that level, they will always be the two huge favourites.”
Mouratoglou also picked Ben Shelton as the dark horse of the tournament. The American recently won the Canadian Open and has been coming up with consistent performances on the tour this season.
Mouratoglou said: “There are some guys who can maybe do something. First one I think of his Ben Shelton, who just won his first Masters 1000, who is American, who will be in the US, who will fear nobody.
Shelton started his US Open campaign with a straight-set win against Ignacio Buse. The left-hander will face Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round.
