Former World No.1 Jimmy Connors expressed his surprise after Carlos Alcaraz admitted that Jannik Sinner was playing better than him in the Wimbledon final on Sunday. Sinner registered a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win against the Spaniard to win his maiden Wimbledon crown.
After losing the opening set, Sinner dominated the next three sets to take revenge for his Roland Garros final loss. The World No.1 was able to dominate the baseline exchanges against the Spaniard.
Connors, who stayed at the top of the ATP rankings for 268 weeks, said Alcaraz should have found a way against Sinner and he might not have said what the Spaniard said after his loss.
“That is a tough thing to admit. I don’t know if I would ever have admitted that. No matter what you have to get in there, mix up your game a bit, or try and do something a bit different,” Connors said on the Advantage Connors podcast.
This loss ended Alcaraz’s 20-match winning streak at SW19 and this was his first loss in a Major final.
Alcaraz said he is going to take a few days off before returning to the court for the North American swing.
“Now I’m going to have a few days off, to unwind. It’s been a very demanding season, especially the last few months. I’ve had very few days off, beyond the ones I spent in Ibiza, which everyone knows,” Carlos Alcaraz said.
“We’re going to listen to my body. I don’t have any physical discomfort at the moment… but playing games like this, week after week, is very tiring. We’ll have to see how I develop and how we approach the American tour,” he added.
Alcaraz would look to be at his best after recharging his batteries.
