World No.1 Jannik Sinner, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and World No. 5 Jack Draper have decided to pull out of the upcoming Toronto Open. Sinner, who recently won his maiden Wimbledon title after beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final, cited that he injured his elbow when he fell awkwardly in the opening set of the fourth-round clash against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov.
The Italian won his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto in 2023.
“I’m really disappointed to be missing the National Bank Open in Toronto, especially as I have such fond memories of playing in Canada,” said Sinner.
“Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me, but after speaking with my team, I have to recover,” Sinner said.
“I would like to thank Karl Hale, the tournament director, for everything he does, and I’m looking forward to returning to Canada and Toronto in the future to play in front of the great fans,” added the Italian player.
On the other hand, Novak Djokovic revealed he is recuperating from a groin injury. The Serbian has won four titles at Toronto. Djokovic had suffered a semifinal loss against Jannik Sinner at SW19.
Draper will miss the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters next month because of a problem with his left arm.
“After Wimbledon, I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season,” Draper posted on social media. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati … See you in NYC!”
