World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz has decided to opt out of the French Open due to a right-hand wrist injury, the athlete confirmed on Friday. Alcaraz suffered the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open this month. After multiple scans, Alcaraz revealed he won’t be able to defend his title at Roland Garros in Paris.

The Spaniard is hopeful of making a strong comeback on the tour. Alcaraz said it would be wise for him to stay cautious and not play in Rome and Paris.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros,” he wrote on X. “It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from here.”

On the other hand, Alcaraz’s compatriot, Rafael Nadal, who won 14 Roland Garros titles in his glorious career, gave support to the former and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Hang in there, Carlos! I hope you have the speediest recovery possible. These difficult moments truly highlight the value of everything you are doing. Stay strong—sending you a big hug! 💪🏼”

In 2025, Alcaraz beat Sinner in the finals of the Italian Open and French Open, where he saved three match points in a thrilling match. 

The Italian Open starts on May 5, whereas the French Open does so on May 18.

In the absence of Alcaraz, World No.1 Jannik Sinner will enter Roland Garros as a favorite. Sinner will look to win his maiden title at the French Open and win his fifth Slam overall.
