Alex Corretja says losing the Wimbledon final is ‘good’ for Carlos Alcaraz

Former Spanish player Alex Corretja reckons losing the Wimbledon final is good for Carlos Alcaraz. The World No.2 suffered a 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6 loss against Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final on Sunday, which was his first defeat in a Slam final.

Alcaraz had a 100% record in the first five Major finals of his career but Sinner was able to put an end to it. The Italian was able to bounce back after losing the opening set and brought his A-game to the court.

The 23-year-old was able to dominate the baseline exchanges against Alcaraz. Corretja reckons losing the Wimbledon final will motivate Alcaraz to work even harder on his game.

Corretja said on the Carrusel Canalla podcast, “Everything that’s happening to Alcaraz is good: when he wins and when he doesn’t.

“That awakens his hunger and desire to progress and evolve.

“If you only win, you think you’re doing everything right. If you get beaten, then you think you’re not unbeatable.”

On the other hand, renowned BBC Tennis commentator David Law said Alcaraz must find a way to do better at the US Open after two early-round exits in the last two years.

Law said on the Tennis podcast, “I think that Alcaraz has got a lot of proving to do in this swing coming up.

“He’s looked the last two years… in 2023 he lost to Medvedev and in 2024 he lost to van de Zandschulp. He just didn’t look right in either of those matches really. It wasn’t like ‘worldy’ performances knocked him out. I mean, they were both very good.

“The real Carlos Alcaraz beats him (Botic) and he hasn’t looked the same for three years so he’s got to figure that out and that’s what was happening a lot of summer with Nadal, some summers occasionally with Djokovic. N

“Neither one of them had as good a record at the US Open as they had elsewhere. It’s tough, it’s really tough to just keep on going.

“So how you make sure that Alcaraz comes into that fresh… I don’t really have any doubts over Sinner, he doesn’t seem to have these let downs. So, I’m fascinated.”

Alcaraz will look to bounce back stronger after the Wimbledon final loss.
