Rising star Antim Panghal has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the upcoming 2024 Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, set to commence on April 11. This move is aimed at focusing her preparations on the much-anticipated Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Panghal, who is only 19, has been in exceptional form, clinching a wrestling quota for the Paris Olympics thanks to her stellar performance and a bronze medal win at last year’s World Championships.
Her 2023 season was marked by impressive achievements, including securing a bronze at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. However, post-Asian Games, Panghal opted not to participate in any tournaments, a decision that shows her dedication towards achieving Olympic glory.
Her absence from the Asian Wrestling Championships signifies a shift in her training and preparation regimen, highlighting her long-term vision and focus on the Paris Games. This decision also followed her choice to skip India’s selection trials for wrestling tournaments.
Stepping into Panghal’s shoes for the Asian Championships is Anju, a formidable wrestler in her own right. Anju’s wrestling prowess was on full display when she secured a bronze medal at the 2021 U23 World Championships.
Moreover, her remarkable victory over Asian Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat in the semi-finals of the March trials has established her as a strong contender. Phogat, a seasoned Olympian, represented India at both the Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016 Olympics.
The Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek promises to show the continent’s wrestling talent, running from April 11 to April 16. The tournament is not just a prestigious event in its own right but also serves as a precursor to the Asian Qualifying Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
As the wrestling community gears up for this significant event, all eyes will be on Anju and her performance, as well as on Panghal’s preparation and journey towards Olympic success.
