2022 Sports Calendar: Key Sporting events of the year – All you need to know about the Schedule

It is expected to be another high-octane Sporting year with many events like Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cup, and T20 World Cup set to enthrall us.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic is still troubling us across the globe and we should consider ourselves lucky that such a jam-packed sporting year is upon us.

We will take a look at all the major sporting events of the year in detail and we will also take a look at their schedule.

4-20 February – Winter Olympics, Beijing

After a successful Olympics in Tokyo, Winter Olympics will be hosted by Beijing from 4th-20 of February. India’s alpine skier Mohammad Arif Khan is the solitary Indian athlete taking part in the event.

4-13 March – Winter Paralympics, Beijing

After the winter Olympics, Beijing will host Winter Paralympics from 4th to 13th March.

4 March-3 April – Cricket Women’s ODI World Cup, New Zealand

Women’s ODI World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand from 4th March to 3rd April. In fact, the event was to be hosted in 2021 but it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. England is the defending champions as they had beaten India in the final of the 2017 edition.

9 April – Horse racing – Grand National, Aintree

Grand National, Horse racing will be hosted in Aintree on the 9th of April.

14 May – Football – FA Cup final, Wembley

FA Cup final will be hosted by Wembley, London on 14th of May. The Women’s FA Cup final will be played at the same venue on 15th May.

28 May – Football – Champions League final, St Petersburg

UEFA Champions League final will be played at St Petersburg on 28th of May. Chelsea is the defending champions as they had beaten Manchester City in the previous season.

2 June to 12 September – Cricket – England men host New Zealand, India, and South Africa

England will host New Zealand, India, and South Africa in packed summer. England will play India in the fifth Test, which was supposed to take place in 2021 but was postponed due to Covid-19 cases in the Virat Kohli-led team.

Tennis: French Open and Wimbledon
French Open will be played from 22nd May to 5th June in Paris whereas Wimbledon will be played from 27th June to 10 July in England.

3 July – Formula 1 – British Grand Prix, Silverstone

2021 season of Formula was one of the exciting seasons in the history of the Sport. The rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen will be once again thrilling.

6-31 July – Football – Women’s Euro 2022, England

The women’s Euro Championship will be hosted by England. The Netherlands are the reigning champions.

14-17 July – Golf – The Open, The Old Course, St Andrews

The Open will be played from July 14 to July 17 at Old Course, St Andrews. Tiger Woods will be the cynosure of all eyes in this event.

28 July-8 August – Commonwealth Games, Birmingham

Commonwealth Games will be hosted by Birmingham. Women Cricket T20 will be played at the event.

11-21 August – European Championships, Munich

European Championships will be played in Munich from 11 to 21 August. Events like athletics, beach volleyball, canoe sprint, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, sport climbing, table tennis and triathlon will be played.

8 Oct-12 Nov – Rugby Union – Women’s World Cup, New Zealand:

Rugby Women World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand from 8th October to 12 November.

15 Oct-19 Nov – Rugby League World Cup, England

Rugby League World Cup will be hosted by England from October 15. There will be separate tournaments for men, women, and disabled players.

17 Oct-14 Nov – Cricket Men’s T20 World Cup, Australia

This edition of the T20 World Cup was to be originally hosted in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. The hosts Australia will look to defend their title after winning their maiden event in 2021 in the UAE.

21 Nov-18 Dec – Football – World Cup, Qatar

The biggest sporting event of the year will be hosted at the fag end of 2022. The FIFA World Cup will be played from 21st November to 18 December in Qatar. France is the defending champion of the event.
