Legendary Zlatan Ibramhimovic has opined that England players must ‘look in the mirror’ after World Cup exit. England suffered a 1-2 loss against Argentina in the semifinal clash at Atlanta on Wednesday.
The Three Lions had taken a 1-0 lead after Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute. However, Argentina bounced back in style as Enzo Fernandez scored a stunner in the 85th minute whereas Lautaro Martinez scored the match-winning goal in the dying minutes of the game, to help La Albiceleste qualify for the second consecutive World Cup final.
England have now lost three World Cup semifinals — 1990, 2018 and 2026. Furthermore, they have ended as runners-up in the last two editions of the Euro. England’s solitary World Cup title came back in 1966 when they defeated West Germany in the summit clash.
The former Swedish striker questioned if England are good enough against a proper team at the World Cup stage.
“If you go back, England has won a World Cup,” Ibrahimović told a mypartner.com panel in New York. “How many times did England beat a proper team?
“Can I ask the audience here? A proper team? Yesterday they played against a proper team [Argentina] in a major tournament.
“Winning against Norway, with all the respect for Norway, it’s not a proper team. And I’m Swedish, that’s f—— teasing.
“But Argentina is a proper team. So yes, England, they show fighting spirit, they show their mentality. But let’s be honest, they didn’t beat a proper team.
The former Barcelona forward also called out English press after the loss.
“And when you beat a proper team, then you start talking. But I know the English press, they like the gossip, they like the propaganda to build them up, to make them big.
“Yesterday was a reality check. There is levels to these games. Levels. That’s the difference.
“Look here in the mirror and ask yourself how good are you?”
England will play France for the third place playoff.
